Porsche’s first take at a turbocharged 911 variant came to the market in 1975 by way of the 930. Producing a groundbreaking 260 hp, it was equipped with a single KKK turbocharger, using technology that was previously exclusive to the company’s racing departments. With a distinctive wide-body design, featuring a prominent rear spoiler and pronounced wheel arches housing its wide rear wheels, the 930 soon became an icon of its day in both style and performance. Deliveries in the US began in 1976 and continued through the 1979 model year, until the implementation of harsher emissions regulations in 1980, which halted import until 1986.
This particularly striking 1979 model-year example was delivered new to its original owner through Giganti Porsche of Indianapolis. Cloaked in classic Guards Red over Tan interior, this Porsche’s optional extras included desirable limited-slip differential, sunroof, and sport seats. It remained under the care of its first owner for an astounding 30 years, followed by just two subsequent long-term owners on the East Coast. A build record on file confirms engine 6890831 as original to the car. The accompanying maintenance records document scrupulous servicing by each caretaker, which is also evidenced by the impeccable condition in which it is presented today. The car displayed 10.363 miles ( ca.16.680 km) at the time of cataloguing; however, the consignor reports that the speedometer was replaced at one point in the car’s history. One of just 806 US-specification examples delivered in 1979, this 930 offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire a long-cherished example of Porsche’s first road-going turbo.
